Brain Principle 2. The Principle of Trial and Error.
Positive Dyslexia The Brain is a trial and error machine, mistakes are learning opportunities.
As Tony Buzan says, “The brain is a trial and error machine.” We learn from our mistakes; correction, repetition and self-correction is the best way to learn. Mistakes are a part of the learning process. Encourage students to embrace mistakes, using reading and spelling mistakes as a stepping stone to new learnings.
Global or analogical learners learn through repeated practical experience which enables them to build deep mental connections. This can be seen in literacy where analogical learners (dyslexics) take longer to learn to read, write and spell compared to their peers. This is partly because the processing style required for literacy (reading and writing) is not the students’ dominant processing style.
- Encourage students to develop the habit of self-correction.
- Encourage students to read and spell check content from their daily journal.
- When a student is writing, encourage him/her to go with the flow and let the pen do the writing. Remind the student not to pay too much attention to spelling, just get the content out and spell check later.
The long-term plan is for the student to form the habit of reading and proofreading their own writing, especially words from their daily journal. Journaling helps to reveal the most common words that the student uses in their environment; these words are the most important words for them to learn. As the student’s vocabulary grows, this will be reflected in their journal as well as other writing.
