The Error of the Clinical Model of Dyslexia

Based on the clinical model of dyslexia, Brain scans would have us believe that dyslexia is a brain-based disorder

The Historical and educational Model of dyslexia shows us that dyslexia, as in difficulty with words has two sides.

What is Dyslexia

  1. On one side of the dyslexia coin is – The inconsistencies in the spelling code. The inconsistency in the spelling code is a major problem for individuals who rely on phonetic spelling.
  2. On the other side of the dyslexia coin is the processing style. The processing style is responsible for how individuals learn and think. In dyslexia, this processing style is called the Global Processing style

Commonly Dyslexia is associated with creativity, This creative processing style is called “The Global Processing style” which distinguishes itself from dyslexia, which means difficulty with words. The Global Processing style is home to the Special Gifts, Skills and Talents dyslexic individuals commonly display.

Three of the Errors of the Clinical Modal of Dyslexia

  1. Not taking into consideration the inconsistencies in the phonetic code and how different people Read and spell ( there’s more than one way to Read and Spell )
  2. Not taking into consideration cognitive diversity, We all don’t learn and think in the same way which means our brains will look different.
  3. Modelling reading issues in healthy individuals after clinical studies of brain damage patients who could not read.

Questions

  • Can we all juggle nine balls?

No, but we all can learn to juggle

  • Can we all rap like jay z?

No, but we all can learn to rap

  • Can we all Draw life-like pictures like a pro artist?

No, but we can all learn to draw

  • Can we all read and spell like world champion spellers and reading champions?

No, but we can all learn to read and spell

Remember dyslexia means difficulty with words, we all have difficulty doing something, the key is to do your best and do it in your own way

The Map is Not the Territory, Brain scans don’t tell us that the English spelling code is Irregular, and Brain scans don’t tell us about an individual’s hobbies and interests. Brain scans do tell us that the brain grows whenever we exercise a particular skill such a reading and writing.
