Dyslexia, Reading Success Methodology
The methodology behind this work takes a personal or psycholinguistic approach to literacy. Psycho, referring to psychology or mind, and linguistics, referring to language. The central element of this psycholinguistic or personal approach to literacy is students’ interests. Student’s interests provide the driving force, and are used as a catalyst to meet the student’s personal literacy needs. This approach is for home and school use and works alongside traditional systematic or sequential phonics programmes which are the foundation of literacy.
This psycholinguistic methodology or approach is personal. It’s about reason, meaning, passion, interest. It’s the ‘why’ behind literacy: it’s the why a student would even bother to pick up a book or write with a pen. The two approaches
Systematic phonics and the personal approach form a complete literacy experience. The methodology of the personal approach is designed to work alongside students’ natural processing styles, to boost their confidence and speed up their learning curve in reading, writing, and spelling. The psycholinguistic approach is designed to give students an outlet for their creativity, multiple intelligences, and self-expression, as well as developing literacy and academic skills. This is done by integrating literacy and the student personal interests.
